Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II
Salary Range between $5,445 – $6,672 Monthly, Depending on Experience

Summerland Sanitary District (SSD) is seeking to hire an experienced Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II. Under direct supervision of the Treatment Plant Operations Manager, the Treatment Plant Operator II operates and maintains an advanced wastewater treatment plant, collection system, and laboratory to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory agency requirements; monitors the treatment processes and performs the full range of facility operations and maintenance work and a wide variety of skilled technical duties, including laboratory analyses and grounds keeping.
Examples of Duties:
- Independently operates and maintains all segments of a tertiary wastewater treatment plant processes including primary, secondary, effluent disposal, and solids handling processes.
- Maintains, compiles, and updates plant operations log and reports; performs routine tests and monitors related to plant operations.
- Performs treatment plant inspections, including monitoring and documenting plant operations by reading gauges, dials, level indicators, recorders, meters, digital readouts, SCADA information, and other instruments.
- Monitors control panels, and adjusts valves, gates, pumps, and blowers to regulate process flows.
- Performs preventive maintenance on all plant processes, including observation, lubrication, adjustments, cleaning, and part replacement.
- Performs replacements and/or repair of treatment plant equipment, laboratory equipment, and other facilities.
- Collects wastewater samples, conducts laboratory tests, and calibrates laboratory equipment.
- Performs maintenance of grounds and buildings including, but not limited to painting, application of protective coatings, refurbishing, gardening, and custodial tasks.
- Operates a truck, a backhoe, a front-end loader, a portable air compressor, portable pumps, portable generators, various hand tools, and other equipment for the maintenance and repair of facilities, buildings, and grounds.
- Under the supervision of Lead Collections/Operator II, performs preventive and corrective maintenance on wastewater collection facilities including cleaning, repairs, and CCTV.
- Participates in construction, maintenance, and repair work involving the wastewater collection system.
- Participates in the daily operation and maintenance of wastewater pump station tasks.
- Keeps work records and prepares reports of completed work.
- Assists with the training and qualifications of Operators I and or Operator-In-Training.
- Performs standby, weekend, and overtime duties.
- May be required to perform the functions of the lower-level classes in this series.
Job Required Certifications
SWRCB Grade II (or higher) Wastewater Operator License – Required
Valid CA Driver’s License – Required
CWEA Mechanical Technologist Grade 1 – highly desirable

Standby Pay
On-call/standby time is paid at the following rates: One and one-half times the hourly pay rate of the employee for being on call during weekdays and two times the hourly pay rate of the employee for being on call for weekends.
